Figure for(e) Ground

Conceptual Design_ Sculpture at Lafayette Park

The sculpture, composed of two symbolic forms, is a result of our interest in harnessing the strength in the history and future of a very determined and faithful community, echoing one of Detroit’s quotes perforating the copper; each form representing those from our past as well as those who will shape our future – the children of Lafayette Park. The lower structure symbolizes the history of the community in Detroit, alluding to both the suffering and the hope and promises of the people. The higher form reaches out to the future through the eyes of our children; these will be handwritten quotes of their dreams, goals, and wishes for how they envision their home and city improving. The figural structure, as an element of the landscape, is superimposed against Mies’s reflecting glass and steel structures to emphasize a figure/ground relationship.
