Finalist_ SUKKAH design competition entry 2012
The project named Hang Tight is an architectural transformation of recycled everyday objects—cloth hangers—into a pavilion, providing these objects with a new and more entertaining purpose in everyday public life.
The driving force behind the design of the Hang Tight is selective sociability in public places, creating a communal gathering point in Liberty Plaza Park that attracts users of all types. The design is modular, utilizing the hangers’ original triangle shape, rotated and mirrored segments that can be easily joined by zip ties and arranged in adaptable formations to fit a wide range of environments.
A total of 3,744 wire clothes hangers are set in fractal patterns, generating intriguing visual connectivity to the surroundings with shadow effects. This design allows air and natural light to pass through, inviting all passersby to engage with the installation.
In addition to its architectural aesthetics, the Hang Tight retains the functionality of its original purpose—to hang clothes. While strolling in the park, people can hang their clothes on the limited number of hangers on the three walls, finding humor in looking up at the sky through recycled T-shirts hung on parts of the roof components.
